NYT links up with LinkedIn
LinkedIn and the New York Times have struck a deal whereby the NYT will have access to LinkedIn profile data. I'm not sure this is a "Brilliant Move" as reported by ReadWriteWeb. But it's interesting.
Although apparently the deal will not allow NYT access to that critical "personally identifiable information" it will allow the grey lady to provide both targeted headlines based on the LinkedIn profile and, more importantly to the financially strapped Times, targeted advertising.
The tie in is to the Times' business and technology sections, which makes sense given LinkedIn's demographics of computer-savvy business people. The first article I clicked to was in fact interesting to me.
What's also interesting is the Times is "getting" that there are a wealth of opportunities online. What they are not getting as well (in my humble opinion, of course) is the relationship between blogs, other "citizen journalism," and the wealth of substantive experts (as opposed to journalism experts) online.
But maybe this is a step in the right direction.
